Though a crucial weapon since the Stone Age, it took the flowering imagination of the Renaissance to evolve the primitive axe into its full beauty and potential. Since swords were not effectively useful against plate armor, maces, axes and war hammers were preferred by the fighting men of the day. Shorter handled axes like this one were favored by knights for mounted combat. This beautiful axe dates toward the early end of the 16th Century. The imaginatively contoured, tempered, high carbon steel head is secured to the hard wood shaft with langets, that are nicely shaped in their own right. The tough, sharp back spike completes quite a formidable weapon.
