The war hammer became a favored weapon of the heavily armored knight, as it allowed him to deal very effective blows. Some what lighter than the mace, the war hammer was just as effective. This war hammer is believed to be German and dates from about 1525 AD. On most hammers, the back spike was the secondary weapon, but on this one it appears to be the primary one. This would be particularly effective against mail, and even plate if it were struck squarely. Only the heaviest armor could stand up to a blow from this type of hammer. Our version is copied from a photograph in Hank's extensive collection; unfortunatley, he lost the name of the museum where the original is located! All he can say is that, "It's in Germany."
