In 920, the son of King Harald from Norway, Erik Blood-Axe, began his reputation as war leader with an expedition to northern Russia. After the death of his father in 931, Erik became king of Norway. His short, two-year reign was marked by the assassination of his brothers who could compromise his reign. Ancient texts describe him as a fratris interfector (brother killer). The bloody connotation of his nickname refers without a doubt to these fratricides. His youngest surviving brother returned from England as the head of an army to hunt down his older brother in 934, which is when his reign of Norway ended.
