The Baiwan, an aboriginal people of Taiwan, originally inhabited the south-central mountains and foothills of what was then Formosa. This rough and rugged terrain bred a tough warrior people who were not averse to head-hunting raids on neighboring tribes. Their short heavy-bladed sword was suited not only to their marauding activities but also to hacking through dense forest undergrowth. Our Baiwan Mountain Sword is accurately based on a museum piece, even replicating the roughly forged finish of the original. The open-sided scabbard is a traditional design but has the very practical advantage of allowing air to circulate around the blade to deter rusting. The elaborate decorations on the solid side of the scabbard feature the great totemic serpent Vorovoboron or elder of snakes, revered as the progenitor of the Baiwan nobility. This very usable piece has a 16" long blade, which tapers from a full ¼" thick at the hilt, and is 22" overall.
