As all Civil War swords, they were more effective during the early years of the war and as new modern weapons such as breech-loaders, repeating rifles and machine guns were introduced the sword became less effective and could only be used in close battles. The Youth Sword is a Civil War 3-bar pattern sabre that was downsized for the young trooper. It was 27.5 inches long overall and not as costly to make as the larger swords. It was used predominantly by the Confederates who were outnumbered by the Union force through the entire war and needed young recruits to fight as the war dragged on.
