The Nordic sword also called the Norman Sword was used by the Normans. The Normans also called Northmen or Norsemen were Scandinavian Vikings that raided European settlements during the 8th century. The French King, Charles the Simple, gave the Normans land in hopes that they would stop attacking France. This new Norman land became known as Northmannia or land of the Northmen, which later became Normandy. The Normans were eventually converted to Christianity and adopted Frankish cavalry warfare. The Nordic sword frequently appears in the Bayeux Tapestry an embroidery that depict the Norman's conquest. The Nordic sword has a wheel pommel and a straight guard or quillons to protect the hand.
